Ash Esmaeili Aimsio

Ash Esmaeili of Aimsio how they quickly plan projects, dispatch resources, and digitally capture activities such as field tickets, LEMs, forms, and timesheets.

Tell us about you, your career, how you founded Aimsio.

Ash Esmaeili: Aimsio was founded in 2013 after a friend approached a group of us with a problem. That group and our friend eventually became the founding team of Aimsio. At the time, we were all working on our graduate studies in computer science in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and software engineering at the University of Calgary.

Our friend had a stake at a field operations company and had identified revenue losses due to using paper forms and tickets on job sites along with other manual processes and spreadsheet overload. We initially reviewed over 50 software solutions out there to identify a fit. After realizing that there isn’t a great solution out there, he joined us in building a platform that would digitize the process and allow companies in field operations to maximize their revenue driven by field operations.

Since then, Aimsio has transformed into a Software as a Service (SaaS) built for companies in heavy industries, and we haven’t looked back!

How does Aimsio innovate?

Ash Esmaeili: We discovered that the manual processes, revenue losses and spreadsheet overload we identified weren’t unique in the industry. Each year the energy and construction industries lose $700B due to communication process inefficiencies. That’s the equivalent to employees losing two full working days each week spent solving avoidable issues.

Aimsio digitizes and transforms field operations, allowing businesses to be proactive with their resources instead of reacting to challenging situations. To date, our customers have collected 1.4 Billion dollars in invoices using Aimsio. It has completely transformed the way information is captured and reported on in the field.

We started listening to our customers, learning more about their challenges and becoming industry experts ourselves to provide a unique solution that addresses key challenges. Our ability to be agile and constantly tweaking the software and releasing bi-weekly has enabled us to be innovating, responsive and pro-active. Aimsio, being born on the cloud with a modern technology stack, in turn, has enabled us to reduce cost, provide superior security, seamless integrations and zero IT work by leveraging million-dollar IT infrastructures offered by the likes of Amazon, Google and Microsoft.

How did the coronavirus affect your employees?

Ash Esmaeili: Before March 2020, Aimsio had two physical offices: one in Calgary and Vancouver. Now, all of us are working from home. It’s been a big change, but we’re finding ways to keep communicating. For example, we’re always taking time to participate in trivia online or have a virtual drink after work. We also post lots of photos of our personal lives on Slack to ensure we feel like we’re having ‘watercooler’ conversations – even if we can’t have them in person. We’ve done fitness challenges, encouraging our employees to get outside, and we’ve done virtual Secret Santa to keep the tradition alive, even if it’s online. There’s always something to look forward to. The team has been creative.

Your final thoughts?

Ash Esmaeili: It’s been quite the year, a shift for the entire world, and Aimsio is just a small part of that world. We decided early on to be proactive and continue providing quality service to our customers while keeping our engaging culture internally as we weather the storm.

Aimsio enables teams to transition away from paper, manual processes. Our platform enables teams to work remotely, but we know that many small businesses weren’t as lucky as we were.

One of the good things to come out of this is that we are now able to hire from a larger pool of talent. We’re no longer restricted to two geographical markets. We believe that tech in Canada (and around the world) is resilient, and we’re excited to see what the next few years bring.
