Navigating the World of Finance during a Pandemic

Brian Tang of Fundamental Research Corp tells us how the independent research house is making professional investment analysis accessible and affordable to anyone who needs it.
First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?
Brian Tang: Fine, thank you. I hope yours are well also.
Tell us about you, your career, how you founded Fundamental Research Corp.
Brian Tang: I started my career in banking, mainly debt syndications. I have always loved equity research. I combined the two aspects to form Fundamental Research Corp. We cover mostly under followed small and micro-cap public (and private) companies under a model similar to that of the rating agencies.
How does Fundamental Research Corp innovate?
Brian Tang: We innovate by investing in people and technology. When it comes down to it, we are a content company, so we need to make sure we are always producing relevant content that is helpful to our audience.
How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?
Brian Tang: It affects all aspects of our business because we are in finance, and more specifically, in the stock market. For example, prior to COVID, there were a lot of conferences we attended and presented at. Now we have moved this online, actively building our YouTube channel and hosting webinars.
Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?
Brian Tang: At the start of the pandemic, we had to make the decision to send everyone home to work remotely. Then we had to decide when to bring them back and what safety procedures to put in place. People are our biggest asset, so we need to make sure they are safe. We also had to navigate the initial sell-off in stocks at the start of the pandemic. That was a very uncertain time.
What specific tools, software, and management skills are you using to navigate this crisis?
Brian Tang: Investing more in data gathering and intelligence.
Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?
Brian Tang: We have to ensure that our content is easy to access and in a format that is relevant to our users and members.
