We talked to Can ALGÜL of Pubinno about beer and he had the following to say:-

First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?

Can ALGÜL: Thank you. We are all healthy and safe. We adapt fast and live in this new normal.

Tell us about you, your career, how you founded Pubinno.

Can ALGÜL: While I was studying civil engineering at university, I was a bartender. At that time, I realized the problems in the beer industry. The bars’ systems have been more than 40 years; they are semi-industrial and working in suboptimal conditions most of the time. Because of the invisibility, there are quality standardization and wastage problems.

My first solution was Digipubs, but it failed because of the regulations. Then I met with my co-founder, and we produced our first product, Beer Point (self-service beer dispenser) at Pubinno. There were prepaid cards; the end consumer showed them and took their draft beer. Beer Point has attracted attention positively from the end consumer.

The Beer Point experience was important for us because we were in the field and talking with all stakeholders in the draft beer ecosystem; bartender, bar owner, waiter, etc. We realized that there was an incredible wastage in the industry. According to sources, the average loss is 23% per keg. This wastage problem covers millions of beer taps.

Another important problem is quality standardization. If you get two bottles of beer from two different supermarkets, the taste and quality will be the same. However, from two different pubs, you can not get the same beer from the draft; it can be stale, warm beer, or with a metallic taste.

Beer is the third most consumed and leading alcoholic beverage in the world. Normally, the best form of beer is draft beer. Bottled beer is like a heated meal, while draft beer is like a meal cooked and served directly. Unfortunately, draft beer is losing the consumer with hygiene and quality and the sellers with efficiency concerns. We decided to produce taps, it’s an amazing opportunity. We wanted to cover the world. Silicon Valley was the right place for this. We arranged a meeting with Y Combinator. We were chosen there; we went to the USA and then failed. Finally, we were selected for the Alchemist Accelerator program.

How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?

Can ALGÜL: From time to time, there were different pandemics in the world. We all see that pub culture has continued for centuries. Our biggest challenge was the tradition, and the Covid-19 outbreak created a wind of change against it. This pandemic has revealed how valuable our technology is. Digitalization has attracted the attention of the industry.

We have supported both the consumers for whom even one drop of savings matters and the bar owners in the bar industry that are going through hard times.

On the other hand, “Hygiene” is the most important topic in the world. Pubinno Technologies serves Perfect Beer in the most hygienic way to the end consumer. We will announce our new innovation, which provides fully automated cleaning of draft beer lines, at the beginning of 2021. Pubinno will continue to build an “Internet of Beer Platform” for all stakeholders in the draft beer ecosystem.

Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?

Can ALGÜL: It was difficult to explain the problem for which we found smart solutions to a traditional industry. I did not give up, despite all the pressure. I make difficult decisions every day, but I always think that either a way is found or a way opens when I have a problem. I guess this is the biggest lesson I’ve learned.

How do you deal with stress and anxiety? How do you project yourself and Pubinno in the future?

Can ALGÜL: I have an office with a terrace overlooking the historical Bosphorus. Especially when I am not abroad, and in the office, I step in front of the magnificent view and breathe in and out, thinking of the “lobster theory” that I have internalized.

We are on our way to becoming the industry standard by providing hygiene and quality guarantee to the consumer. We are producing the World’s First AI-Powered beer taps and building an “Internet of Beer” Platform to connect all the stakeholders in the draft beer ecosystem. Wherever I fly in the world, I want to drink Perfect Beer from Pubinno Smart Taps.

Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?

Can ALGÜL: We don’t have any direct competitors. Of course, some companies have tried to produce specific solutions for the traditional system that have not changed for 40 years, and no one has provided end-to-end digital solutions and connected all the stakeholders in the draft beer ecosystem Pubinno’s technology.

Your final thoughts?

Can ALGÜL: On this way, we set off with the vision of creating an “Internet of Beer”, we served more than 25 million pints of Perfect Beer from 5 different geographies. This is just the beginning. Our new innovation will show again why “The Future of Draft Beer” is Pubinno.
