Chris Kachris of InAccel tells us how to speed up your applications from your browser with zero code changes.

Tell us about you, your career, how you founded InAccel.

Chris Kachris: After more than 10 years working in research centers, it was time to bring the research results to the market. Typical processors can no longer provide high performance for computationally demanding applications like deep learning. Hardware accelerators can provide high performance and lower energy consumption compared to typical processors. So in 2018, we decided to commercialize the findings of the research works in the domain of hardware accelerators.

How does InAccel innovate?

Chris Kachris: InAccel provides a unique framework that allows easy utilization and deployment of hardware accelerators by any user or any software developer. InAccel provides the technology that allows you to speed up your application with zero code changes. Actually, InAccel technology allows anyone to enjoy 10x to 20x speedup using FPGA-based hardware accelerators with zero code changes.

How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?

Chris Kachris: The good thing about software companies is that they can keep working remotely without significantly affecting the operation of the company. However, brainstorming is very important that cannot be easily replicated working remotely.

Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?

Chris Kachris: Every startup has to adapt very fast to the new conditions, and sometimes it has to pivot several times to identify the right market where it can prevail. The most important lesson is to find the ways that your technology can be used to solve the actual problem that your clients face.

What specific tools, software, and management skills are you using to navigate this crisis?

Chris Kachris: Remote collaboration tools are very important for the smooth operation of the companies. Thankfully, there are several tools that allow easy collaboration and coordination of the efforts in a small team.

Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?

Chris Kachris: There are several companies that provide acceleration of applications like machine learning, deep learning, genomics, and financial applications. Inaccel is the only company that provides an abstraction layer that allows easy integration of hardware accelerators (like FPGAs and ASICs) from high-level programming languages (C/C++, Java, python) and high-level frameworks like Spark, Scikit learn, and Keras.

Your final thoughts?

Chris Kachris: Startups will have to adapt very fast to the new conditions. Whether it is a B2C or B2B in all cases, the founders need to understand that they need to solve real problems, and after all, it is important to remember that it’s all about establishing good relationships with the people that we are working with; whether it is the customers or our colleagues.
