David Mills on Monkee Mount, a Hands-free Massage Gun Holder
David Mills invents Monkee Mount to achieve a deep message on hard-to-reach places.
Nineteen months into the pandemic, and regardless of vaccination status, many people are still hesitant about returning to the gym. Workout routines may have changed but sore muscles in the neck, back, and shoulder area still follows any good workout.
You’ve likely invested in a massage gun or tried the one your friend or family member owns, to help work out the knots, and sore spots after a workout. Massage guns are not only more convenient but they have also become the newly popular “must-have” fitness tool. You can enjoy using it to relieve sore muscles after working out, or to relieve tension after a stressful day at work. But even your favourite massage gun can’t relieve those hard-to-reach places on your upper back, shoulders and neck.
Monkee Mount is a hands-free massage gun holder with adjustable settings to help you achieve the deep massage you need.
U.S. Olympic silver medalist Alex Ferreira enjoys using Monkee Mount in between his training sessions preparing for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
“One thing I really like about Monkee Mount is I can stretch and get in deep, at the same time, to reach those muscles that I can’t usually reach,” said Ferreira.
But you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to enjoy the convenience and simplicity of Monkee Mount.
David Mills, the founder and creator of Monkee Mount, is a personal trainer and noticed his clients struggling to use their massage guns in those hard-to-reach places. He experienced similar struggles so he set out to find an easier way to massage the body without the assistance of a friend or partner.
We chatted with David about how he’s been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and how his idea for Monkee Mount came to fruition:
First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?
David Mills: Doing great right now, we have decided to spend some time living in Costa Rica with our two children to get away from a lot of the COVID-related problems.
Tell us about you, your career, how you founded Monkee Mount.
David Mills: I began my career in the British Army as an infantry officer seeing combat In Afghanistan. I then moved to Aspen to work as a personal trainer and began working on new fitness products. My first was the Vibe Hex Pro Roller. I wanted to help clients better enhance their recovery and was looking for opportunities within the marketplace. I then saw that clients were having trouble using their massage guns effectively on the backside of their bodies, so I set about creating a solution to make it easier. And thus my second invention, the Monkee Mount was born.
How does Monkee Mount innovate?
David Mills: We innovate by looking for opportunities to make products better. I am always observing inefficiencies within products and equipment and looking to make things easier to use or safer. I still have a few more ideas but I am just taking it one step at a time.
How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business and how are you coping?
David Mills: The coronavirus hurt me a lot with my first business. However, the resilience I learned from my time in the military and the ability to adapt helped me to pivot and move into creating and marketing my new product. I think being ready to adapt and change your approach is always a good idea in business.
Did you have to make difficult choices and what are the lessons learned?
David Mills: I learned an important lesson in making sure you diversify your revenue streams. I was making a lot of my sales through retail and had not invested enough time into the online side of my business. So when all of the stores closed, that was a really tough period for me.
How do you deal with stress and anxiety, how do you project yourself and Monkee Mount in the future?
David Mills: Having served in combat I am pretty resilient to stress in general. However, in business, every day brings a new challenge. I combat this by meditating, remembering that challenges are part of the process and a great learning opportunity. Also that at the time the world feels like it is falling apart but that when you look back you will see that it was all happening for a reason. I also focus on staying in the present and remembering there is more to life than just business. Making sure I spend time with my family and find time to Surf and Ski.
Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?
David Mills: I am in a challenging position with Monkee Mount as we are one of the first companies to create such a product. I know competitors will show up very quickly. However, we have got patents in place and have worked very hard to make sure the product is of the highest quality and has the best functionality. It has been in development for over two years. That may seem like a long time but I really wanted to get every detail right. I believe in the highest level of customer service and in quality products, I think these will help to make us a favorite in the space. I am also always looking to innovate so have other products I plan to bring out soon.
Your final thoughts?
David Mills: I am super excited about the Monkee Mount. It’s a product I really believe in and definitely solves a problem for consumers. I think people see the value in it very quickly and I am excited to help as many people as possible through this innovation.
