First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?

Denis Benyaminov: It was a really difficult time. We follow the COVID-19 safety protocols in the office and many employees work remotely. I was also ill with COVID-19. Now all my family and friends are alive and well. Thanks!

Tell us about you, your career, and how you founded WebSailors.

Denis Benyaminov: My way as a Software professional began in 2007 when I entered the University and graduated with the Master of Organisation and Technology of Information Security.

While studying, I was already passionate about learning the Web-development and started to work as a Software Tester. After a year I’ve found my own company WebSailors. Over the years and thousands of lines of code, WebSailors has earned a strong reputation as a reliable partner for our clients.

How does WebSailors innovate?

Denis Benyaminov: There are quite a few startups among our clients with unique ideas that we turn into reality. For example, the data protection system we developed has become a part of the “20 Best Cybersecurity Startups To Watch In 2020”, Forbes says. In addition, we are developing two of our own products that have no analogs on the market. I think we will introduce them soon.

How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business and how are you coping?

Denis Benyaminov: Although some industries have cut funding, all of our clients stayed with us. In addition, during the pandemic, we began to develop several more projects.

Did you have to make difficult choices and what are the lessons learned?

Denis Benyaminov: Yes. For example, we had a choice to lose some of the profits or remain customer-focused. Of course, we chose the second option, since it is very important for us to anticipate the expectations of our clients so that each of them is completely satisfied.

In addition, it was not an easy decision to fire an employee who was doing his job irresponsibly and not at the level that we need. the professionalism of employees and the ability to communicate with clients create the company’s image. Therefore, we carefully approach the selection of personnel, but not everything can be foreseen in advance. And the lesson I learned here is – Delaying firing is a serious mistake that will cost you dearly.

What specific tools, software, and management skills are you using to navigate this crisis?

Denis Benyaminov: We have been keen on the following areas:-

  • Long-term cooperation with customers and increasing their loyalty;
  • More effort into marketing;
  • More effective motivation system for employees;
  • Expanding our internal team;
  • Very flexible with payments. Our Clients are welcome to select the most convenient option for them. We support payment in different currencies and legal entities. We work at both Fixed cost and T&M (time and material) models, but on an hourly basis is the most common practice.

Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?

Denis Benyaminov: The software development industry has very serious competition. Our competitors are web development companies from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and India. That’s why we plan to stick to a specialization in web and hybrid development and selected technologies (JavaScript, Redux, React, React Native, Angular, Node.js, Electron, Ionic, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Python, Docker). Also, we plan to specialize in industries where we have the widest expertise. It’s information security, energy, booking, and finance.

We provide a full cycle of services: software architecture, design, development, testing, maintenance. Our Clients can come with just an idea or with ongoing development and in both ways, our specialists will seamlessly be integrated into a project. We also have a flexible pricing policy. The experience and knowledge of our specialists on the market are more expensive. Due to the above factors, we are favorably distinguished from competitors.
