First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?
Dominik Golenia: We are glad because no one got sick. Unfortunately, the pandemic has made us see each other less often.
Tell us about you, your career, how you founded Fitatu.
Dominik Golenia: Our existing company (Vitalia.pl) is the leader in Poland in the category of “weight loss over the Internet.” The natural way was expansion. We created the company and service “Fitatu.” We already have millions of users. In the initial version, it was a calorie calculator. However, we have already started to offer much more than the competition. We want to be a leader as nutrition experts. Help people lose weight in this way, but also to overcome various diseases or live longer.
How does Fitatu innovate?
Dominik Golenia: We have about 50 employees. We have implemented a culture of searching and inventing innovations in the company. Every employee knows that everything we produce needs to give users more opportunities. It must be better than the best solutions for the competition. Such a requirement makes innovation a result.
How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?
Dominik Golenia: We switched almost 100% to remote work. We had 2 offices. We give up one of them because it stands empty. After the pandemic, we continue to work with teams mainly online. But 1 to 2 times a week to meet in the office. In terms of sales results, it was a decrease in March 2020. But then there were increases. Currently, sales are going very well, and Fitatu is growing dynamically.
Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?
Dominik Golenia: Perhaps we worked too long in the office. Sometimes employees can be more productive from home. Nothing distracts them. In addition, it is greener. And we have more time for the family.
How do you deal with stress and anxiety?
Dominik Golenia: Daily movement, sports, walk. Good, healthy nutrition. Good relations with the family. And the cat. I don’t have it yet, but I’m looking for it.
Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?
Dominik Golenia: Myfitnesspal, Yazio. Our plan is simple. We offer our users more than the competition. For example, only in “Fitatu”, you can share the menu with your partner. The user can track how many calories, proteins, fats he consumes, and 26 other vitamins and trace elements. We recently added features for diabetics. You can also track net carbohydrates. In 2021, we will publish some innovations that our competitors do not have at all.
