If you have ever used Amazon or Netflix, you sure remember the personalized book recommendations or Netflix movie suggestions. We might not tend to think this is done by new technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, which use data to find patterns in what each user likes and views, and create tailor-made recommendations. Without realizing how fast this new technology became part of our everyday lives, AI is everywhere.

The rapid growth of AI is changing our life and this new technology is being used for many different purposes. As surprising as it sounds, rising AI is bringing new roles and impact on the education system as well.

Many of us can be skeptical at the fact that AI may be able to teach students and take over teachers. We believe education is different and what is most important in education is to have a positive relationship and human connection between students and teachers in order to have a lasting impact on their own success. And actually, AI helps to focus on this idea.

However, it is not difficult to think about some of the examples, we can easily find on education and technology. Today, students don’t need to attend physical classes and take online classes as long as they have internet and computer. New technologies allow us to have this new education trend in a better, faster, and more efficient way. What impacts can we expect from this new trend?

Personalized education system

Every student is different. They all have their own way and pace of learning. However, the traditional education systems are designed to suit as many students as possible by targeting 80% of the middle. At the same time, it is quite difficult for teachers to figure out how to meet the different needs of each student. Can AI help us create better approaches to optimize the needs of each learner?

As seen on Amazon or Netflix, the AI-driven personalized recommendations can be applied to the way students learn and are taught. AI is able to understand the different levels of students by distinguishing their educational background, interests, and academic goals. This enables teachers to work more efficiently helping them offer personalized recommendations to guide each student. AI also customizes each student’s individual learning needs especially for in-class assignments, homework, as well as final exams to make sure students get the best assistance in their education.

Intelligent tutoring service

AI is also changing the role of humans in many capacities, including tutors. The computer system – Intelligence Tutoring System (ITS) aims to provide immediate and customized instruction or feedback to learners, usually without requiring intervention from a human teacher. The goal of this new technology is to make learning more meaningful and efficient.

The cognitive tutor, produced by Carnegie Learning is one of the examples of the intelligent tutoring system. It offers immediate feedback to students as they are working through problems and delivers customized support and instruction by measuring students’ learning style and knowledge. Taking into account that many students don’t appreciate to receive critical feedback in front of teachers and peers, this new system will make students feel comfortable to make the mistakes needed for their learning improvement.

Smart content

Alongside the intelligent tutoring system, teachers will be assisted by smart learning content using AI to facilitate more individualized approaches for their students. AI is helping to create a series of digital content from traditional textbooks, which translate them into outlines, chapter summaries, study guides, and practical tests.

A smart content program such as Cram 101 and JustTheFacts101, for example, use AI to turn any textbook into a smart study guide in order to help students achieve better results in less time. These programs will also be able to generate more personalized materials helping students struggling with difficult concepts and information. The Translator program is also a good example of this new system, which allows students to produce subtitles for what the lecturer is saying, no matter what language they use.

Transparent assessment

If students can have more personalized learning system, it will require to have a more personalized assessment as well. However, would it be easy for teachers to do so? AI-powered assessment can be a great solution to this question, which can analyze millions of complex patterns in the individual learning as well as assess learners according to their different pace, acceptance, and aptitude towards the curriculum.

This new technology can also be used to automate the grading tasks in multiple-choice tests. It can enable teachers to reduce stress and spend more time with students rather than consuming long hours grading them. In fact, AI is already being used to help detect cheating. It can accurately identify whether a student wrote their assignment on their own or copied from someone else. Moreover, more processes are expected to be done by technology: software developers are creating new ways to grade even written essays and responses.

Despite the fact we all had worries that technology can replace our traditional education system, it turns out there are many more promising aspects we can expect in the near future. It contributes to making students’ life easier through personalized learning. Teachers also get benefits from more efficient teaching ways by the automation of tedious tasks. However, it is true the roles and competencies of teachers will need to be redesigned, thus creating a win-win situation for students, teachers, and parents.

Is AI already being used for the education system in your own country?
