Marc Hazout SusGlobal Energy

We talked to Marc Hazout of SusGlobal Energy about sustainable global management of the organic wastes and here is what he said about it.

First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?

Marc Hazout: We are doing fine and are grateful that we are involved in an essential business which has seen no interruption.

Tell us about you, your career, how you founded SusGlobal Energy.

Marc Hazout: My background is in the Capital Markets, and I run a private equity fund founded in 1998. We mostly invest in proprietary technology, and we were identifying circular economy models and decided to start a sustainable organic waste managing and processing company that produces regenerative products from organic waste such as fertilizers both dry compost or liquid fertilizer.

How does SusGlobal Energy innovate?

Marc Hazout: We find solutions to organic waste management and processing to produce proprietary regenerative products as part of our circular economy model.

How does the coronavirus pandemic affect your business finances?

Marc Hazout: Has not affected us whatsoever. As a matter of fact, we saw an increase in organic waste streams early in the pandemic when the lockdowns forced the population to stay at home and cook, resulting in an increase in organic waste streams.

Did you have to make difficult choices regarding human resources, and what are the lessons learned?

Marc Hazout: None whatsoever. As an essential business, we experienced no interruption.

How did your customer relationship management evolve? Do you use any specific tools to be efficient?

Marc Hazout: None whatsoever. As an essential business, we experienced no interruption.

Did you benefit from any government grants and did that help keep your business afloat?

Marc Hazout: The only government grant was from the IESO which is part of Hydro initiative, but this was to automate our facility’s power usage which resulted in a 50% reduction in monthly Hydro bills and requirement.

Your final thoughts?

Marc Hazout: We are a circular economy model processing municipal organic waste in a sustainable manner producing regenerative products which are reintroduced in the cycle as enhancements to the earth’s soil and a diversion from landfill reducing GHG emissions as part of the climate change initiative.
