We talked to Martin Hubert of Freightgate about its transportation management solutions and COVID-19.

Tell us about you, your career, how you founded Freightgate.

Martin Hubert: I was born in Germany, sold my first program at age 16, then went on to study computer science. While at the university, I started a software company of selling custom software solutions. After graduating with a Master in Computer Science and MBA, I did a short engagement in New York, NY, at a freight company whose president afterward offered me a job as Director IT. In 1994, my independent Internet quest began by founding a company that focused on providing track and trace capability over the internet by establishing EDI capabilities with carriers. We spun-off Freightgate in 2000 with a vision to provide a focused platform that improves life for logistics companies and shippers.

We are driven by a passion for innovation and never-ending improvements, leading a team that strives to provide innovative logistics solutions, fostering global collaboration, and productivity while building a highly configurable platform with a global-by-design philosophy. We will continue to deploy technology to find smarter ways to solve today’s and tomorrow’s supply chain challenges.

How does Freightgate innovate?

Martin Hubert: We have developed a culture fostering continuous improvement and innovation. We even perform annual ISO9001:2015 audits to have independent external auditors confirm our processes comply with this overarching goal. Using this methodology, Freightgate has created one of the broadest, most flexible logistics cloud offerings in the market. Using this foundation, we offer packages that enable Importers and Exporters, big and small, to take advantage of our unique dynamic rating and routing paired with comprehensive schedule and benchmark data. We hope to help many Importers and Exporters get ready for this unprecedented RFP season with our upcoming webinar.

Now is the time to start making strategic moves for your company’s future, to plan ahead, define your company’s supply chain, to de-risk and come out stronger on the other end. Equip your business with the leading-edge technologies you need to run your supply chain and help align your strategy with your risk appetite.

With Freightgate Logistics Cloud, we can help you through these difficult times by helping you achieve your supply chain goals with a platform to best fit your business.

We have decades of experience delivering digital supply chain transformation services and software to shippers, 3PLs, and their customers. With one of the most flexible, vertically-integrated real-time global visibility platforms. With an impressive history, a proven track record of innovation, and recognition from Insight Success as the 2020s Most Innovative SCM Solution Provider, the Freightgate team strives to create solutions that help its customers generate exponential returns.

How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?

Martin Hubert: As we all know, the sudden change to remote work life caught many businesses, including ours, by surprise. However, we are an international team and are therefore used and prepared to work from home. It is important to still maintain a positive team spirit, and as we’re talking daily on web-conferences and the telephone, we are proud to have succeeded in that goal. The most important part of our business, the customers, are definitely benefiting more than ever from the passion and collaboration we provide. We started a Linked-In group for the industry to foster cross-functional collaboration and a spirit that enables helping each other.

Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?

Martin Hubert: With COVID-19 posing critical challenges for businesses, many organizations are experiencing vulnerabilities related to their workforce, significant fluctuations in product demand, and heavy supply chain disruption from the affected areas. Unpredictable events and uncertainty related to the pandemic continue to expand the scope of risks, highlighting the heightened need for crisis management and plans to build strategic, operational, and financial resiliency across the industry.

We are blessed to have built a loyal customer following and are energized by the trust place in us. Even when working remotely, we have daily stand-ups and check-ins to stay aligned and post daily wins to celebrate.

How do you deal with stress and anxiety, how do you project yourself and Freightgate in the future?

Martin Hubert: It is kind of interesting to see more people and companies realizing what we have been advocating for such a long time. With Freightgate, we already have the perfect digital transformation tool, but we understand that it’s hard to overcome internal hurdles to modernize the way businesses work. Now more than ever, the industry can benefit from what we have been doing for more than 20 years and automate processes, raise efficiencies, reduce monotonous tasks and create an environment where employees can get creative and find better ways to solve the daily puzzles.

We’re doing our due diligence in tailoring the right solutions to our customers while improving our cloud with enhanced AI and ML capabilities, and many more to come.

Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?

Martin HubertCompetitor 1: IBM and Competitor 2: Infor

The industry will get more connected, and we see how carriers are pushing for online bookings, and more API enabled services already. Freight rates have been extremely volatile with the fluctuating supply and demand, empty sailings, cancelled passenger flights, airlines taking out seats to allow for more cargo space, and truck capacity being very constrained. We expect to be uniquely positioned to empower many new customers with our DYNAMIC RATING and ROUTING platform, enable vast efficiency gains with zero-touch dispatch (RPA), and our investment in IoT. We continue to provide exceptional value and expect many Importers and Exporters to join the movement towards dynamic, connected, zero-touch shipping processes that the Freightgate Logistic Cloud is empowered to deliver like no other platform.

We’re doing our due diligence in tailoring the right solutions to our customers while improving our cloud with enhanced AI and ML capabilities, and many more to come.
