Mohannad Shahin of EDEXY tells us about an interactive business directory platform for discovering and rating local and online businesses in the Middle East.
First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?
Mohannad Shahin: Spending more time together has strengthened bonds while my wife and I embraced working from home. If anything, I would say it has been stressful as we were no longer able to see other family members.
Tell us about you, your career, how you founded EDEXY.
Mohannad Shahin: I am the Founder and CEO of Edexy, a serial entrepreneur and is passionate about Innovation and Blockchain. I founded Edexy back in 2018. I now act as CEO of the company, where most of my time and energy goes into working with our clients and managing our team.
The idea for Edexy was to take business directories and reshape them to look and feel more interactive. Users could connect with business owners, listings, deals and transact. We foster a review culture in the Middle East by using algorithms and to curate verified listings and ratings. My main drive is to make a lasting impact in the region and create value for everyone that’s affected by Edexy.
How does EDEXY innovate?
Mohannad Shahin: In a world where people have a lot of choices, solving a problem uniquely is the deciding factor, and this by itself is innovative! At Edexy, we innovate by constantly looking for new ways to meet business owners’ requests with new and innovative features, improve their experience, and uplevel their presence. We at Edexy, advocate the “No idea is a bad idea” policy to push innovation through intrapreneurship and the ideas that our employees bring to the company. Moreover, we shake things up and assign employees new and exciting projects outside their daily activities to get them to think outside of the box. We encourage them to constantly experiment and research.
How does the coronavirus pandemic affect your business finances?
Mohannad Shahin: So far it has affected some of our customers and we’ve offered them a few options like reducing our premium business listings in order to help them get through it. We understand this is an unprecedented thing that is happening, and we want to be there for our customers and help as much as we can. As more businesses are switching online and to e-commerce, we continue to grow even in the middle of this pandemic since Edexy is an online platform.
Did you have to make difficult choices regarding human resources and what are the lessons learned?
Mohannad Shahin: We were fortunate enough to not make any decision with unfavorable implications on any team member. Our rapid response to deal with the current crisis was to make sure that all our employees, whom we call, assets are safe and provide them with the support needed in such tough times.
We can draw many lessons from this particular crisis; accepting remote work as a new reality, considering honesty with our people, the power of the joint efforts with our assets, and the full dedication of the whole team, and fighting through complexities requires fast and transparent communication.
How did your customer relationship management evolve? Do you use any specific tools to be efficient?
Mohannad Shahin: Although this pandemic has introduced numerous challenges, we constantly undergo quick upgrades to our system. We use a tool to actively manage our brand presence and identity within the market to maintain a sense of trust and confidence amongst our customers, especially during the pandemic. We have a plan of action and customer experience (CX) strategy in place to help our business navigate through these challenging times.
Did you benefit from any government grants, and did that help keep your business afloat?
Mohannad Shahin: Fortunately, we didn’t resort to any government grants to keep our business afloat.

Mohannad Shahin: Whatever journey you want to embark on, you need to understand your WHY. What motivates you? What excites you? What don’t you like about the world? and what do you think you could do better?
