Moritz Koppe of PROBIS Expert tells us about software for effective cost management and project controlling.
First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?
Moritz Koppe: The family and I are doing great despite these crazy times. I’m glad the kids are back in school.
Tell us about you, your career, how you joined PROBIS Expert.
Moritz Koppe: The idea to create the company was born in 2016 when the decision was made to further develop the PROBIS software, which had been running for 15 years, and to spin it off into a separate company. This was closely linked to the recurring problems that arise in traditional cost management due to a lack of transparency, unclear tables, and error-prone data maintenance by different users. Errors in controlling can cause enormous costs. With PROBIS Expert, such problems can be avoided. I came to the company in 2010 as a project manager and later took on the role of managing director in 2019.
How does PROBIS Expert innovate?
Moritz Koppe: We innovate by offering banks, investors, project controllers, and project developers a possibility to control all their real estate projects with one platform in real time. Our software PROBIS Expert enables different perspectives on a project, portfolio, or fund. Management gets the view via user-defined dashboards on key figures and company structures, while the project manager receives an order from a development project according to DIN. In turn, a service provider can overlook the data in dimensions he needs (component, level, change notification, TOTEX, etc.). PROBIS Expert makes it possible to effectively control and evaluate costs in complex real estate projects. The software also offers the possibility to select projects from a portfolio and evaluate them against each other. You can filter all projects by any number of project attributes (country, city, quality, function, etc.) or dimensions. We can also provide cross-project statistics and analysis of cash flows, forecasts, and cost reports. Since PROBIS Expert is the extension of a software that has been running successfully for 15 years, listing all the possibilities here would certainly go beyond the scope. In principle, it can be stated that we ourselves come from the development industry and advise our customers with regards to digitalization. We take them by the hand to optimize digital processes and overall control. As a leading quantity surveyor and construction monitor for financing banks, emproc also creates cost transparency and risk minimization for projects within and outside the EU and enables cost stability and early cost certainty in every project phase.
How does the coronavirus pandemic affect your business finances?
Moritz Koppe: It affects us to a certain degree, but the real estate market and construction industry in Europe were not too badly affected by the pandemic.
Did you have to make difficult choices regarding human resources, and what are the lessons learned?
Moritz Koppe: It was pretty much business as usual apart from the transition to home office. What we have learned, given modern technology, is that you can still a run a complex business even from home.
How did your customer relationship management evolve? Do you use any specific tools to be efficient?
Moritz Koppe: Our customer relationship management has been pretty steady. We are quite strong on the consulting side but have adopted our approach slightly with apps such as Teams or Zoom.
Did you benefit from any government grants, and did that help keep your business afloat?
Moritz Koppe: Luckily, we didn’t have to.
Your final thoughts?
Moritz Koppe: We have set out to digitalise the real estate industry and, in particular, its cost management and the cost management and financial processes of complex real estate projects. If you are a developer, bank, or project manager, and you would like to implement digital processes in your company, then do not hesitate to contact us! Thanks for the interview.
