Natalia Higuera, Sceenic : “For the first time we are all experiencing disruption in our lives”

First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID19 times? 

Natalia Higuera : We are all doing very well, thank you for asking. These times have been very challenging for all of us. My family lives back in Colombia so it’s been hard to know that we are apart and that our future plans to meet soon and travel won’t happen.

But we are all healthy and alive. That’s the most important thing, soon we will meet again.

Tell us about you, your career, how you founded or joined this company

Natalia Higuera : I have known and followed the company since before it was even called Sceenic. Jonathan Williams, COO and I work together back in 2012 in the music industry. He was based in Argentina and we met while working in projects together.

Then he and Gabo created SayYeah (the first company). I was managing independent bands in Colombia and SayYeah was one of the promotional channels I used to promote the artist´s music and news around Latin-American, the show and community they had were enormous and across different countries in Latam.

I moved back to the UK and they were looking for a Head of Marketing and Communications and I was given the opportunity to work with the team, so now I’m honoured to be not just an old consumer but now part of #TeamSceenic.

How does your company innovate? 

Natalia Higuera : Jonathan and Paul decided to change the business from B2C to B2B, and came with the Watch Together product back in 2013. I related to the idea because I have been living abroad and always wanted to share moments with friends and family, been able to watch together movies with friends or favourite tv shows back then was as important for me as now.

They had a vision, and today more than ever that vision is becoming our new normal a new way of consuming and been together, something that at Sceenic we call #BeInTheMoment


How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business and how are you coping?

Natalia Higuera : We have been working for years on bringing people together, today more than before that is something everyone can relate to. We can be together even if we cannot see each other.

We called our technology the togetherness API (video-calling technology Sceenic developed) we recently started powering: events, training sessions, conferences, work-shops, classes, parties and more.

We are a white-label company and we want companies and people to use our technology to create customized experiences for their users, business, colleagues, etc.

Did you have to make difficult choices and what are the lessons learned?

Natalia Higuera : During all this year Sceenic has been fighting for an idea that was at times seen as crazy. Today the market is validating the vision of our founders, all those difficult times and fights are worth it.

The lessons I have learnt from Paul, Jonny and Aharon is that when you have a vision, you will have to fight and overcome many things. But at the end, hard work always pays off.

How do you deal with stress and anxiety, how do you project yourself and your company in the future?

Natalia Higuera : These are difficult times for everyone, for the first time we are all experiencing disruption in our lives. Controlling the anxiety is difficult when so much has changed in just a few days and weeks. Stress is part of a process, one of the things I have learnt to do is to prioritise, not everything is urgent and we need to look after ourselves and our personal times, it has been hectic at the office but we are now in a place where we wanted to be so all the workload has been a joy.

We want to change the industry and power even more things, allow people to stay together and help companies to create experiences that add value to people´s lives. I want to keep being part of a team that is always creating new and move amazing experiences and that in the future is behind all those things that we will start calling ‘normal’.

Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?

Natalia Higuera : There are many companies that offer video-calling solutions. But, we want to offer an experience. For us is all about who does it better.

Our technology has been fully constructed by our team. The quality of video and audio we offer is unique and we believe that every company that wants to work with us should use it to create a unique experience for their unique users. We are living in a world that is creating personalized experiences for everyone. We want to be behind the experiences that companies create, to add value to their users.

Your final thoughts

Natalia Higuera : We want to remind companies to embrace technology to innovate and create. There are still many things we can do in the industry, and this is just the beginning.
