Ogugua Belonwu MySalaryScale

Ogugua Belonwu of MySalaryScale tells us how to earn more money and discover great companies in Nigeria.

First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?

Ogugua Belonwu: We are doing great. We are navigating through the challenging times necessitated by COVID-19 in a very resilient manner.

Tell us about you, your career, how you founded MySalaryScale.

Ogugua Belonwu: I am a software developer with a deep interest in the human resources technology space.

I founded MySalaryScale to deliver salary and company review information in Africa which was non-existent. HR professionals had no reliable way of conducting salary research and candidates had no way of getting information before interviews.

Prior to MySalaryScale, I founder MyJobMag and we are currently operational in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana.

How does MySalaryScale innovate?

Ogugua Belonwu: There is a lot not done in the salary benchmarking space in Africa. Our innovation style hinges on data. Based on user data, user feedback, survey, and sales data, we decide on features that make the most impact.

As a small team, we leverage our strength which is a fast decision-making process and we can launch products and iterate fast.

How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business and how are you coping?

Ogugua Belonwu: COVID-19 affected the purchasing power of our customers. Due to our agility, we created products targeting another audience based on the data we have. It is a new product line and we are evaluating the potentials.

Did you have to make difficult choices and what are the lessons learned?

Ogugua Belonwu: During the peak of the pandemic in 2020, we nearly fell for the “bandwagon effect”. We started an experiment that was not thought through. However, after much data-driven discussion, we decided to stick to our business core. While that did not appear “trendy”, we are glad we weren’t distracted at all.

What specific tools, software, and management skills are you using to navigate this crisis?

Ogugua Belonwu: We introduced Jira for our technology project management. We are making the best of Slack for our everyday communication and we are test running HR solutions best suited for remote work.

Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?

Ogugua Belonwu: All our competitors are international such as Indeed, Salary.com, and Payscale. So far, we do not have an indigenous competitor. However, the market is global and every company must innovate to remain relevant. The key to our continued having our skin in the game is data. We keep learning from our data and creating products for different industries.
