We talked to Ozan Ucar of Keepnet Labs about cybersecurity and anti-phishing solutions. This is what he said:
First of all, how are you and your family doing in these Covid times?
Ozan Ucar: Thank you. It was challenging for my family and I, like everyone else. After a year of this pandemic, as a family, we have reexamined and changed every part of their lives.
Tell us about you, your career, how you founded Keepnet Labs.
Ozan Ucar: I have been working in the cybersecurity world for more than 15 years. I have been innovating in the cyber-security space since 2006, and in 2008b I was co-founded Coslat Security Systems, a new generation firewall technology that detected and prevented network based attacks.
In 2010, I co-founded a Cybersecurity Consulting Company, which offered a wider range of cyber-security services to major corporate clients in his native Turkey, including cyber-security training, penetration testing, forensics, and incident response. The company has grown to a team of 40 people and is one of the most respected cyber-security companies in Turkey. In 2017, I left my position as managing partner of Cybersecurity Consulting Company to focus on the development of Keepnet Labs’ range of cyber-security products.
I hold international accreditations, including Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Certified Security Analyst (ECSA), Licensed Penetration Tester – LPT (Master), and Master Penetration Tester.
How does Keepnet Labs innovate?
Ozan Ucar: We have a dedicated and professional team who are experienced people in cybersecurity. At Keepnet Labs, we focus on email based attacks which are the main means for criminals to attack. ( Over 90% of successful attacks are based on emails). We are innovative since we protect businesses through life cycle of email attacks. We basically brought together the expensive and hard-to-reach solutions to one platform in a cheap and accessible way.
Keepnet Labs protects businesses throughout the full lifecycle of email-based cyber-attacks. We have developed a full spectrum suite of cyber-security defence, threat monitoring, security management, and user awareness products that encapsulate an integrated approach to people, processes, and technology, thus reducing the threat in all areas of email risks.
We are committed to continuous innovation and expansion of our suite of security products in order to meet the needs of a dynamic and rapidly growing networked population in a constantly evolving cyber-threat environment.
Our cyber defence strategy adopts three holistic elements: people, process, and technology:
· People: we focus on the “human factor,” using engaging, structured content to raise cyber awareness and engender “active defence” behaviours.
· Process: we support the development and management of user security awareness plans, monitor user compliance and Key Performance Indicators, and embed cybersecurity as an intrinsic part of the corporate culture.
· Technology: we scan and isolate malicious attachments and email content and provide system administrators with “one-click” management across the enterprise.
Our internal corporate strategy creates a stimulating and innovative environment where the Keepnet team has the opportunity to continually enhance their skills and creativity while contributing to growth.
How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?
Ozan Ucar: Despite it affected a lot of business, we manage to cope with it, and in fact, before the pandemic, we had 60 clients globally, but now we reached 300 globally.
Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?
Ozan Ucar: Yes, recruiting the right person and creating a dedicated team was the most challenging part for me. But we have a perfect team right now. Also, trying to make a business on a global level, compete with global competitors without a network was challenging. However, Cylon Labs, and Tech Nation, Newable helped and guided us for this.
What specific tools, software, and management skills are you using to navigate this crisis?
Ozan Ucar: We have an incident response policy and follow it in terms of an incident.
Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?
Ozan Ucar: Knowbe4, Cofence, Proofpoint. We are doing our best to innovate, and for this to happen, we have opened an R&D office.
Your final thoughts?
Ozan Ucar: I would suggest to all startups to take a look around at their products and services you are currently using and their competitors. They have to think about why they are better. They also focus on solving a problem with new ideas to change the game. This is an important step for all great inventions and startup businesses to grow. They focus on developing products based on needs and problems. Then, they definitely be successful.
