We talked to Peter Ma of MixPose on how their streaming platform leverages artificial intelligence to empower yoga instructors, personal trainers and dance teachers and this is what he had to say.

First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?

Peter Ma: We are doing very well, my family lives in NY, and I have not traveled since the first lockdown in March. Thanks for asking.

Tell us about you, your career, how you founded MixPose.

Peter Ma: My name is Peter Ma. I am Co-Founder/CEO at MixPose. We are a live streaming platform that uses real-time AI pose detection. Our goal is to build relationships through virtual environments, starting with yoga. I’ve been working as a rapid prototype consultant for the past few years, where I’ve often participated in prototyping competitions known as hackathons. It’s a way to win some money but also to meet potential clients. I am part of Nvidia AI Innovator, arm innovator, as well as Intel Software Innovator. We’ve originally come up with the idea of MixPose leveraging AI pose detection on the edge device at a hackathon. When lockdown began with COVID-19, we saw the need for the platform to keep people active during the pandemic and give a sense of belonging in the community.

How does MixPose innovate?

Peter Ma: Our goal is to create and enhance relationships between instructors and their students, and we innovate on AI pose detection. We run real-time pose detection on edge devices such as your phone or laptop, classify types of poses you are doing and send it back to the instructors. This way, instructors can see those who are doing wrong poses and comments on them, and have real-time analytics on what’s going on in the class. We use AI to create engagements, those engagements lead to interactions, and through interactions, we build relationships.

How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?

Peter Ma: The COVID19 pandemic has pushed us to launch the startup. It was a side project for 3 of us, but when lockdown began, we saw our friends in the fitness industry, losing jobs while others were looking for exercise options. We decided to build this startup not just during COVID19 but also to push virtual fitness further.

Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?

Peter Ma: All 3 Co-Founders decided to quit our full-time jobs and contracts to work on this startup full time because we believe we can make a difference in the virtual class environment.

How do you deal with stress and anxiety?

Peter Ma: Luckily, we started our platform with yoga, and I’ve been doing yoga almost every day to tackle stress and anxiety.

Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?

Peter Ma: There are many competitors out there, but the one with the most market is still zoom yoga or zoom fitness. Zoom was built for conference calls, but it is the option where people go to host their classes. We believe we can do much better in creating and maintaining the student-teacher relationships with our technology.

Your final thoughts?

Peter Ma: We invite you to take a yoga class on https://mixpose.com and let us know if you have any feedback.
