We talked to Raul Pinheiro of Phosphorland about managing farms and he had the following to say:-
First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?
Raul Pinheiro: Great. One of us had COVID-19 but with no trouble during or after the infection. Despite that, it is the normal life we can have nowadays.
Tell us about you, your career, how you founded Phosphorland.
Raul Pinheiro: I graduated as an agricultural engineer and had some student/professional experiences abroad (Poland, Australia, and Brazil). After finishing these experiences in 2014, I decided to open Phosphorland because I saw a market opportunity.
How does Phosphorland innovate?
Raul Pinheiro: Phosphorland innovates in the way farming can be managed. We have a global overview of farm management, and we are not restricted to manage just the irrigation system or any other specific issue.
How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?
Raul Pinheiro: This pandemic brought confusion to markets. Companies are afraid to make investments, and some have huge sales difficulties. People with confinements have been consuming less and, for instance, wine is not being sold because of the restrictions to restaurants. If a company cannot sell, how can it buy or invest? We had some business canceled until this situation passes.
Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?
Raul Pinheiro: At the moment, no difficult choice needs to be made. I hope the near future doesn’t change it and things get better.
How do you deal with stress and anxiety?
Raul Pinheiro: Stress and anxiety are “normal” to have every day. Being a company owner gives you some unwanted psychological issues, but they can be avoided or even cease to exist when things go well. Daily management is not easy, but with time we learn how to deal with it. I usually hang out or exercise to manage stress.
Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?
Raul Pinheiro: There are several competitors around the world, and there is space for many, and competition is great to make us innovate every day. To stay in the market, we work every day to improve and offer even better farm management software.
Your final thoughts?
Raul Pinheiro: I hope this situation passes as quickly as possible, and markets return to normal. This will be great for companies, employees, for everyone else.
