First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?
Richard Lowe: Doing very well, thanks. I am isolating myself, wearing masks, keeping distance, having things delivered.
Tell us about you, your career, how you founded The Writing King.
Richard Lowe: In 2013, I decided to leave my 6-figure position at Trader Joe’s (Director of Computer Operations and Technical Services), moved to Florida (from California), and started my own business. I chose a second career in ghostwriting, and I love it. I made good money from the beginning and am now making more as a freelancer than I was at my old job.
How does The Writing King innovate?
Richard Lowe: I can write about anything because I use interviews and research to fill in my knowledge gaps. I’ve written books and articles about AI, ML, AR/VR, IoT, Cybersecurity, real estate, property management, dentistry, and sales. I’ve also written several novels and children’s books.
How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?
Richard Lowe: My business improved by 50% starting on the first week of the pandemic.
Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?
Richard Lowe: I had to prospect like crazy, and that paid off. The lesson learned is to always be prospecting for new clients. I did lose several clients (including a couple to Covid), but because I keep my network active, it was no trouble finding new work.
How do you deal with stress and anxiety, how do you project yourself and The Writing King in the future?
Richard Lowe: I take a long walk every couple of hours to fight anxiety. I also work on my own books and novels.
I plan to increase my business by 50% in 2021.
Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?
Richard Lowe: I’ve put myself into a position where there is little competition. I’m unique in that I have a strong technical and leadership background and can write well.
Your final thoughts?
Richard Lowe: The future looks great. I just need to keep prospecting and always maintain my network.
