First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?
Roberto Wong: Some family members tested positive for Covid-19; fortunately, nothing serious, but this made me aware of practicing much stricter sanitary and care measures with the team.
Tell us about you, your career, how you founded DESCIFRA.
Roberto Wong: I have a degree in Economics and a specialization in Business Development. I have participated in three acceleration processes: NUMA, WAYRA, and NAVE.
My passion for maps led me to create DESCIFRA with two other co-founders almost eight years ago, with the purpose to support SMEs with real market information around their business. We had to evolve, given the need for medium to big companies. Today, we are a SaaS company that allows our customers to make better decisions with insights and valuable information and a referent of Geographic Data Analysis in Mexico.
How does DESCIFRA innovate?
Roberto Wong: We succeed like no one else in incorporating real-world data with digital data using the territory as the master key.
We evaluate the past, understand the present, and predict the future to quickly adapt to the changing world and meet tomorrow’s challenges.
Constant innovation has allowed us to evolve our services under the slogan: how do we make geographical data analysis more efficient?
How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?
Roberto Wong: We were affected by COVID-19 positively because the pandemic made it clear how necessary it is to have information, not in terms of the amount of data we can access, but information that gives clear answers based on already established data and processes. We had that information, and we were able to help our clients to make better decisions, and although they knew our service value, the pandemic validated it.
Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?
Roberto Wong: The lesson, the team is everything.
How do you deal with stress and anxiety?
Roberto Wong: As an entrepreneur, I have learned the importance of taking your time and leaving work for a few moments (although it is my life). Lately, I decided to train for triathlons, which has helped me with stress and anxiety.
Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?
Roberto Wong: Most relevant: Geoblink; however, their technology is base on GIS systems such as ESRI or Carto. This year we have developed our technology to focus on Geospatial Intelligence Analysis or Geointelligence in a SaaS Platform, where the location and analysis area is the core of the platform.
Your final thoughts?
Roberto Wong: I believe the most critical challenge for businesses in this COVID-19 era is rapid adaptability and risk reduction. Companies and businesses need to adopt a thorough digital transformation and consider data and up-to-date information, not only an ally but as a differentiator.
