Ryan Cook, founder of NextUpRecruitment tells us about facilitating sports scholarships in the USA.

First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?

Ryan Cook: My family and I are happy and healthy and that’s what’s important during these turbulent times.

Tell us about you, your career, and how you founded NextUpRecruitment.

Ryan Cook: Ryan set up NextUpRecruitment in 2017 after several years in Chicago at Wilbur Wright College playing college basketball. The Manchester, England-born and bred athlete didn’t have the experience he expected though and ended up sleeping on the floor without heating for more than a year to realize his dreams.

After fracturing both of his legs, Ryan turned to the future and created a business model for his scholarship agency which was promptly given an F by his business teachers. Driven by this, Ryan set about putting his model into practice and four years later, after securing $200M in scholarships and making dreams come true for thousands of aspiring athletes, he and NextUpRecruitment, continue to have a huge impact.

How does NextUpRecruitment innovate?

Ryan Cook: We are the only company within the space to launch our own recruitment app which connects athletes and their families with college coaches.

How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business and how are you coping?

Ryan Cook: The coronavirus has completely shut down the sport, for the most part, meaning now more than ever athletes require exposure and guidance, which has us extremely busy at the moment.

Did you have to make difficult choices and what are the lessons learned?

Ryan Cook: No

What specific tools, software, and management skills are you using to navigate this crisis?

Ryan Cook: Slack, Zoom, ClickUp, Calendly.

Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?

Ryan Cook: Every single day, somebody new enters the industry. We are always looking for ways to innovate and stay in front of the competition and we will continue to do so.
