Succeeding on Purpose; How a Two Time Inc 5000 Entrepreneur Has Taken a Systematic Approach to Growth

We talked to Trent Dyrsmid to Flowster on how Cloud Workflow Software is supporting eCommerce during COVID-19.
First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times?
Trent Dyrsmid: We are all healthy and happy.
Tell us about you, your career, how you founded Flowster.
Trent Dyrsmid: I’ve been an entrepreneur since 2001, sold my first company in 2008. My full bio is here. I started this company after giving this talk to a group of about 500 other Amazon resellers. At the time, I had no plan to start a software company, but the demand for me to sell copies of the workflows that I’d developed for my Amazon reseller business (twice on Inc 5000) led me to start the software company. We’ve bootstrapped and sold $2M worth of workflows in our first two years.
How does Flowster innovate?
Trent Dyrsmid: At this point, thanks to my being a podcast host and a member of the War Room Mastermind, I’m constantly exposed to really great ideas that have been proven to work by other entrepreneurs running other companies. Whenever I can, I bring these ideas back to our management team (4 of us in total) to hash out and determine if we should be running experiments to validate if the idea is viable for our SaaS business.
How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?
Trent Dyrsmid: No negative impact at all. In fact, the opposite. We are riding the eCommerce trend for everything we can.
Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?
Trent Dyrsmid: As a result of COVID? No…not at all.
How do you deal with stress and anxiety? How do you project yourself and Flowster in the future?
Trent Dyrsmid: I live a pretty low-stress life, primarily be managing debt and cash on hand. Less debt and more cash = lower stress.
Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?
Trent Dyrsmid: In the workflow management software space, we have an endless list of competitors. Fortunately, none of them are focused solely on eCommerce, and their go to market strategies are very different than ours..so…for now…we enjoy a blue ocean of sorts.
Your final thoughts?
Trent Dyrsmid: It’s 8 pm, I’ve worked 10 hours today, and I have to put my daughter to bed. Time to sign off!
