Recommendations for saving energy in your business can be broken down into four areas: heating, lighting, air conditioning, and office equipment. From these four areas, you can implement a series of measures that will help you minimize the energy consumption and environmental impact of your business.

To identify areas for improvement, there are initiatives you can implement, for example, an environmental or energy audit that reveals areas where you can save more energy.

Save energy with office lighting

Depending on your sector of activity, the lighting of your office or your professional premises can represent an energy consumption that is not negligible (on average 5%). Advantageous EEC aid is available to help you reduce your consumption of this item. This is a great place to start saving. One of the easiest steps you can take is to change the bulbs to LED bulbs. But you don’t just have to look at the bulbs, you can also look for efficient lamps, which maximize the light emanating from the bulb. For example, you can opt for luminous flux regulators which allow you to use only the power required. Also, if you can, take advantage of natural lighting. Indeed, in addition to saving energy, it reduces the eye fatigue of workers. Natural and artificial light can be perfectly combined. Workers must also take part in these initiatives energy savings in VSEs and SMEs, and it’s up to them to turn off the lights when they’re not needed. It’s up to you to make them aware of it.

Save energy in office air conditioning and heating

To save energy, in summer the air conditioning must be set to 4 ℃ below the outside temperature and without dropping below 26 ℃ to avoid any thermal shock. And in winter, the optimum temperature for working is 20ºC. You can set the office air conditioning to always be at this temperature, avoiding unnecessary energy use. To get the most out of these devices, check them regularly. You should also take advantage of the sunlight: in winter it warms you, but in summer you can use tools such as blinds to prevent excess heat from entering the office, without losing that natural light.

Office equipment and energy saving

Again, the industry in which you work is the key to measuring the energy savings made. For example, if there is no night or weekend shift, turning off printers and copiers at night and on weekends can reduce their consumption by 10%. The modem or router is also a big expense when no one is using them, and it’s up to you to disconnect them.

Finally, you have computers, which can represent up to 8% of the electricity consumption in business. To get started, set your computers to power saving mode to limit power consumption. When you’re going to take breaks for longer than an hour, you can turn them off or at least put them to sleep. For shorter pauses, in addition to sleep, turn off the screen. You should do this every time you turn off the PC.

Now you know how to save energy. It is therefore the best way to involve your company in an ecological approach while reducing your bills!
