The spilling incidents are not unusual to users as once in a while; it happens to all of us if we’re not careful with liquids around our PC or laptop. Now, you might be casually drinking herb tea or a glass of juice near your computer/laptop in your home office while focusing on something important when the most annoying and nightmarish spilling accident happens, putting you at your wit’s end. So, what do you do next?

The answer is don’t panic and calmly deal with the situation at hand. This article will give you some authentic and useful tips to help you handle your laptop if it gets wet.

1- Take precautions:

You must be very careful and try not to touch the device with bare hands to safeguard yourself against electrical current. If your hands or clothes get wet during spilling, you must avoid contact with the device and take precautions before you come forward to handle the computer.

Also, if you hear weird sounds, smell burning and see smoke or other similar activity, you should leave the device alone. Instead of reaching for the plug to break off the connection, you could power off the circuit-breaker. You could come and handle the device when things cool down and look calm.

2- Disconnect the power cord:

The first and foremost step is to disconnect the power cord after you have ensured the area is safe and can handle the device. Press the power button for at least 10 seconds immediately. You can’t go for a normal shutting down process and must turn off the laptop quickly.

It is essential to get this step done because if you let the laptop remain open any longer, the liquid will reach the internal parts spreading damage like a virus, causing short-circuit, which could lead to fire and explosions.

3- Remove the battery and all connected external devices:

After turning off the notebook, you must remove all external devices connected to it. Laptops with external batteries can be removed with ease. So, you would only need to take it out from the bottom by holding the latches. If you are tech-savvy, you could use the screwdriver to unfasten the bolts and open the frame to pull out the internal battery.

4- Use towels to wipe off the liquid:

The next step is to use a towel or a lint-free cloth to absorb the remaining water/drink from the laptop’s surface, including the USB ports, headphone jack and vents. If you can manage to open up the bottom frame, use the lint-free cloth to gently clean the liquid from the components and allow it to dry.

It is highly recommended that you don’t turn on the laptop for 24 hours at least to let the liquid evaporate. However, if you need to use the laptop urgently, you could power it on after a minimum of 4 to 6 hours.

5- Contact a professional:

Whether you take care of the liquid damage problem or not, in both cases, contacting a well-known computer and laptop repair company like Geeks Callout (AU) would benefit you. Because even if you dry the internals, a specialist can ensure if all of the residues have dissipated or the device still needs a thorough cleansing. An expert would ensure your device becomes functioning and safe to use again.

Final Thoughts:

Many computers suffer from liquid damage; however, you can save your computer from getting permanently damaged and unusable. By following our tips, you can minimize the harm. Also, in case the water gets to your battery compartment, it is recommended that you replace that battery. Moreover, get in touch with a PC expert and take help as needed.
