Learn Anything with Flashcards
Flashcards are a tool for effective memorization and repetition of studied material, which was invented back in the 70s of the last century. Typically, it is used to learn a new language, but it is suitable for any other information.
A modern option is electronic flashcards. They are convenient and efficient because you can add audio, images and take them with you anywhere. Let’s talk about how to study anything using Anki PRO flashcards.
Flashcards from Anki PRO. What is this?
Anki PRO is a unique application that will help you remember new words, expressions and any other information easier and faster. The program uses a method of spaced repetition, the effectiveness of which has been confirmed by numerous studies. With Anki flashcards from Anki PRO, the learning process will not be too complicated, long and dreary. The user can create unique flashcards by adding not only words, but also images, audio and video.
Anki PRO is active learning. You need to repeat the cards every day so that the information is securely stored in your head. At the same time, it is important that the material itself is presented in the correct way. Signs of a good flashcard:
- Key information is underlined.
- Ask an open-ended question that requires a detailed answer.
- Contains pictures, audio or video if necessary.
Rules that will help you remember as much information as possible from flashcards
Rules can make learning much easier and more effective if used wisely.
Rule One: Don’t create flashcards just for the sake of memorizing facts.
Mindlessly memorizing facts is a boring way to learn. And if you’re bored, then you’re doing something wrong. Here’s the one fact you need to remember: flashcards can be useful and fun at the same time. What turns into a game is remembered much better.
Instead of just reading what’s on the card, vary your learning a little. Here are some examples:
- Explain, using your own words, why this information is true.
- Use mnemonics and analogies.
- Add visual components to the card.
- Try to find arguments for and against.
- List as many practical cases as possible.
Rule two: create your own training system
After preparing the cards, it is necessary to develop a training system. In this case, discipline is much more important than random activities. You can develop a basis by answering some simple questions:
- How often and when exactly will you study? Option: 15 minutes in the morning and evening, which you spend on the subway on the way to and from work.
- How should cards be combined and how often should they be updated?
- Do I need to use pictures and audio files?
- Should you create your own pro anki decks with the right themes, or will you limit yourself to what others have already created?
Rule three: study everywhere
The big advantage of cards is that they are simple and very practical to use. You can take your smartphone with the Anki PRO application with you anywhere. This means that you can exercise whenever possible – on the bus, in the elevator, while waiting in line, and so on. But you don’t need to study like crazy one week and then ignore app notifications the next. Try to balance the number of hours you devote to studying.
Rule Four: Break Difficult Concepts into Multiple Questions
If you’re a history student, you probably know that some concepts are too complex to fit on one card.
Therefore, you need to split them into several blocks. Surprisingly, this process itself allows you to better absorb information. When it comes to science, difficult concepts build on easier ones, and if you understand them, you’ll learn the whole thing.
Rule five: say your answer out loud
Japanese railroad employees have developed a rule for themselves whereby they say out loud a phrase that signifies the action they have just performed. This method lets the brain know that the information is very important. In addition, this approach makes memorization more vivid, as it connects the auditory channel. There are people who can perfectly translate printed texts, but are completely unable to pronounce foreign words out loud. Therefore, with this approach you kill two birds with one stone.
Rule Six: Don’t Treat Flashcards as a Magic Pill
Flashcards are a great tool for learning, but they are far from the only ones. Therefore, the best thing you can do is to combine this method with others, traditional and not so traditional:
- Tests
- Textbooks
- Learning grammar and rules.
- Lessons with a tutor.
- Patrice
- Educational videos.
Flashcards provide correct but not complete information, so combine them with something else to avoid learning blind spots.
Rule seven: one question, one answer
This rule should be followed at the very beginning, when you are still learning something new. You should not hope that you will quickly climb the mountain, because long-term regressions are possible. Therefore, one question – one answer.
After some time, you will realize that you have learned the basic level. Only now you can complicate the cards or not mention in them what you have already studied for a long time. How do you know when the time has come? Only if you have never made a mistake on a single card during the week. We tested ourselves for seven days and never made a mistake. From now on you can complicate things.
Rule Eight: Productivity sometimes means procrastination.
When you’re learning English, you might want to put on flashcards all the words you come across while watching a movie or reading a book. But this is not entirely correct.
There are many words in English that you need to learn first. Some of them form stable phrases, which also need to be remembered. But you most likely will not need complex and ancient words that you may come across in books at the beginning of your study (or even never at all).
Rule Nine: Learn, Then Remember
Simply memorizing information on autopilot is not a good idea. First, become interested in it and delve into the subject of study. For example, if you want to learn the periodic table, take an interest in each element separately, read Wikipedia and collect interesting information. This technique is very effective: you will be able to study the subject much better.
If you are not using Anki PRO flashcards yet, you are missing out. Download the application right now and make the learning process ten times more effective.
