Regardless of the occasion, your partner always deserves a lovely meal. It doesn’t always have to be a birthday or Valentine’s Day, for example, as you can surprise your loved one with a beautiful dinner on any night of the week.

Of course, it’s okay to let them know you’re scheduling something at home in advance, just in case they walk into the house with takeaway pizza and ruin your dinner plans!

So, let’s say you’ve messaged your partner that you’re going to make them a meal when they get home, then what are the following steps? We’ll guide you through it.

Prepare the room

Let’s start by organising the area. This means you need to clear away any clutter from the dining room and table, like unfolded laundry, unwashed dishes, newspapers, and anything else that might accumulate over time and look a bit of an eyesore during a fancy meal.

Once you’ve vacuumed the floor and wiped the surfaces clean, the next stage is to arrange the table for eating. This means setting cutlery, putting down placemats, and finding your best glasses for the table. This guide has fantastic advice on how to set cutlery appropriately so that everything looks right and nothing is missing from the table.

Decide on a healthy and delicious meal

What to cook for your partner depends entirely on your skills in the kitchen! If you think you can pull off a roasted chicken with all the trimmings, then go ahead. There are always many healthy meals you can cook, but the main thing to keep in mind is your loved one’s food preferences and any dietary requirements (now’s not the time to forget they are vegan or have a nut allergy).

If you want to keep things easy and quick but still deliver a tasty meal that your partner will love, then go with pasta. No matter if it’s spaghetti, macaroni, or penne, pasta comes in loads of different forms that are all simple to cook with boiling water.

You can make a pasta sauce such as pesto yourself, or just buy a premade jar at your local supermarket. You don’t have to admit that you bought the sauce if you want to assure your partner that you made everything yourself!

You could also cut up a few vegetables such as red peppers, zucchinis, and onions, then throw them in a frying pan with oil and cook everything for a few minutes. Including these in the pasta adds a nice final touch and what’s more, veggies are healthy and delicious!

Set the mood

Once the food has been made, serve it up on your very best plates and only use the fancy cutlery. After all, you want this to be a special meal for that special someone, right?

Put on some relaxing music that isn’t too intense, such as smooth jazz or classical. There’s a time and place for rock or pop music, but for a nice dinner, go with easy background music that you don’t have to shout over when talking at the dinner table.

Want to know the final lifehack for a fancy dinner? Scented candles. The lighting is the key to a great meal, and you can’t go wrong with a candlelit dinner to make everything glow.

Dress up

Just like everything else, you should look your best! It’s no good cooking a gorgeous meal, lighting the candles, and putting on some nice music, only for your partner to show up and you’re wearing your old hoodie with sweatpants.

Wear your finest clothing reserved for the best occasions, but allow your loved one to have time to change or be aware of the dress code in advance. It’s not fair on them if you’re dressed to the nines while they feel underdressed.

Turn off the gadgets

Finally, switch off all gadgets that might disrupt your evening meal! This means your mobile phone (yes, there is a way to turn off a phone), tablets, computers, and the television. The last thing you want during a meal is notifications pinging every five minutes and being distracted by calls. Turn off everything so that you and your loved one can enjoy a meal and simply have a good conversation.

That’s it! Once you’ve completed all those steps, enjoy a drink to relax after all your hard work. Trust us, your partner will appreciate all your effort and perhaps want to treat you another time with a meal.
