The automotive industry is midway through a revolution, with the internal combustion engine being displaced by an electric alternative. According to the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders, there was a 40% increase in the sale of battery electric vehicles in 2022 – a trend that’s only likely to accelerate as charging infrastructure is rolled out across the UK. Even if you’re not buying an electric car outright, you might instead lease one.

One of the most major impediments to electric vehicle adoption, of course, is the fear that you’ll run out of juice midway through a journey, and be unable to find a place to charge. For this reason, many electric motorists seek to install a charging station on their own driveway.

The most practical of these home charging stations come in the form of a wall-mounted box which can be attached to your vehicle with the help of a cable. According to government statistics, around 90% of electric vehicle charging takes place at home – but if you’re using a standard household plug, you might in for a long wait. If you’re considering upgrading to something more specialised, then it’s worth assessing the market.

Let’s look at five of the most popular brands, and help you decide which is right for you.

Zappi

This home charger comes courtesy of myenergi, which is a British company specialising in this variety of charger. These chargers offer a great balance between charging speed, reliability and aesthetics – the latter of which is important, given that this is going to be a significant feature on the exterior of your property.

Ohme

Where Ohme tends to excel is its customer service, which scores very highly on customer surveys. The charger comes with a screen and a control panel, making it easy to see what’s going on under the hood.

Pod Point

You might recognise Pod Point from supermarket car parks. The company has partnered with a few major retailers to allow customers to get their vehicle topped up during a shopping trip. The chargers are very easy to use – which is always welcome when you’re adopting a new technology.

EO

EO, alongside Pod Point, is another big name in the brave new world of electric vehicle charging. The charging points are reliable and stylish – though many motorists have pointed out the shortcomings of the smartphone app, which urgently needs to be brought up to speed with the competition.

Wall Box

Wall Box has recently picked up an award for design, with the help of its first public fast-charging station, the Supernova. The company is undoubtedly better known for its home chargers, however, which are durable and easy to get started with, right out of the box.
