Two People holding Black Gaming Consoles

Gaming graphics design is becoming a more complex field. With that in mind, it’s important to outsource the work for professional gaming graphics design tasks to save time and better spend the resources on other fronts of your game. In this blog post, you will find tips for finding and working with a sure-fire company that delivers top quality art at an affordable price.

Ask for Some Samples of Their Work

The first thing you should do when outsourcing game development companies is to ask for samples of their work. You can choose from their games that have been published or games that are still in production. To get an idea about the artists, see if these games have a world-class quality or not. Check also if the developers have good relationships with publishers and studios, or if they are eager to enter into contracts with them. You might want to check their portfolio and see the kind of experience they had in the past. It is also important to know what kind of services they offer to their clientele.

When outsourcing game development companies, it is a good idea to check references that are in the style of the game you are making. It will give you an idea of how they would execute your vision and the time it would take. It will also give you an idea how much work is involved if you want to change something in their previous work(s). Their portfolio can show art like characters, enemies, backgrounds, characters and props.

Find reputable companies using online reviews

Look into online reviews from other designers who have worked with the same company before, or look into reviews from companies who offer free samples. You can also see what other people are saying about the designer on websites like Twitter or Reddit. It’s not uncommon for companies to provide free or trial graphics when they establish a new portfolio. It should be noted that these are only opinions and are difficult to verify, but search for them anyway.

Look for companies that have a genuine interest in working with you

A company that just wants your money is likely to produce cheap work, won’t respond to your questions, and will leave you hanging in the end. It’s important to find a company that genuinely wants to work with you, even if it means making compromises on what they would like to do. Look through their portfolio and try talking with designers via email. Try to find contact info for a representative, but if you can’t then reach out to the game outsourcing companies directly.

Check Company Size

Most companies will have a small team and this is fine if you want a small team, relatively cheap price and fast delivery. If you want to outsource game art companies with a large team who can do longer projects and deliver high quality content, you need to be ready to pay more. If you are making a mobile game, then it is better to find small sized companies (as they are faster) but if you want state of the art games then it is better to find larger sized companies. The flip side is that larger companies may take time before the demo. There is always a trade-off between speed of production and quality of art.

Get a Sense of Their Visual Culture

The visual culture differs from each unique business culture and industry. This difference is what defines what is considered “good design” in a particular field. For instance, if you’re working on a project related to urban, fast-paced lifestyles, the visuals and art style may be gritty and realistic. Sports games or action games often use this approach. However, if you’re designing a fantasy game that uses magic and mythology as their setting, your work may have a more magical and artistic feel to it. Again, the overall goal of your client should inform your decision on how to proceed with your design.

Check Delivery Time

Be very realistic on what you are expecting with regards to time when outsourcing game art companies. For example if you want your art within 6 months, then most likely it will take longer than 6 months as it requires a lot of work and trials to get this into a polished game design. While you are checking out their works and portfolio, look for any examples of work that are similar to what you want. When you contact the game outsourcing companies, ask them how long it would take for a similar project. If they do not have anything similar, then it is better to ask just a rough estimate. Check their previous projects with regards to time lines and finding out if they can deliver on time. It is always good idea to check the chat history in forums like Envato artist chat room or Freelancer chat room since these will give you an idea if they can deliver as per your vision.

Ask what their rates are

You’re able to find this information by asking them how many hours they will work for or how much they charge per hour. The amount of hours that a certain artist will work is important because it tells you how much time they’ll be able to dedicate towards your project. If the artist plans on working a full day and then working part-time on the project, then you might want to look for someone else. It’s an especially bad sign if the artist charges by the hour and says that there is overtime involved, which can cost you quite a lot of money.

Finding the right game outsourcing companies can be a real challenge and it’s often a case of trial and error to see who works best for you. As seen above there are some important things to look at when choosing an art company, such as their experience with the type of game you want to make. It’s also important that you get a firm budget in place so that neither side gets disappointed or caught out by the cost of creating your artwork. It’s better to factor in some time for modifications too, as an image can often change during development.
