How to Build and Manage a Remote Startup

Remote Startup

The age of establishing a business without needing physical premises has well and truly arrived, and now it is easier than ever for entrepreneurs to realize their ambitions while relying entirely on a remote team.

Of course you will need the right tools and tactics to do this successfully, so here are some pieces of advice for helping the seed of a startup to grow and blossom remotely.

Choose the right software tools

Managers can have a far easier time of wrangling remote teams so long as they have suitable software solutions at their disposal.

There are all sorts of potent options to consider, from project management software that will let you oversee potentially complex initiatives and hit tight deadlines, to payroll solutions that let you calculate salaries and avoid tax errors.

The tools you pick will of course need to reflect the industry you operate in and the aims you hope to achieve, but whatever the case, it is always worth testing out platforms before you make a more comprehensive commitment to them so that you do not end up stuck with a service that falls short of expectations.

Hire the right people

Recruitment is a challenge in a traditional start-up, and has its own unique obstacles to encompass in a remote setting.

Clearly the best solution is to look for talented individuals who are already entirely attuned to the remote working ecosystem, and working with freelancers rather than immediately hiring permanent team members is definitely a possibility. In the long term you may move to having a full time staff for your organization, but getting started with assistance from people you discover via services like Upwork and PPH could be ideal in certain contexts.

Communicate in the right way

Having already discussed the importance of software tools for remote startups, it is also worth talking about how crucial it is to optimize the way that you communicate with the people you are responsible for managing.

It is not simply a case of getting everyone on Slack or Discord, or creating fatiguing Zoom meetings every morning arbitrarily, but rather about ensuring that you put the quality of your communication above the quantity of it.

You also need to evaluate how you approach employee engagement when running teams remotely, since it is not enough to simply assume that everyone is feeling the same levels of involvement with your up-and-coming organization simply because they are turning up to virtual meetings and completing their tasks on time. Feelings of isolation are commonplace in remote workers, and it is necessary for managers to make contact on a one-to-one basis to minimize this issue.

You should also reiterate how open you are to getting input from team members, because encouraging open communication in both directions will create a healthier culture, allow you to keep talented people onboard and develop stronger foundations for your startup which will make an impact as it grows and evolves.

Make the right statements in public

Drumming up interest in your fledgling products, services and projects as a startup is hard in normal circumstances and even tougher when remote work is thrown into the mix.

This is not just about boosting your profile and connecting with prospective customers and clients, but also about enhancing employee satisfaction even further and showing recognition for what you have achieved together.

Using social media to shout about what you are up to makes a lot of sense in this scenario, and tagging in team members to bring them under the same umbrella of praise will assist you in not looking self-congratulatory.

These are just a few jumping off points for forging your remote startup, so keep exploring more strategies and make changes if something isn’t working.
