* Prices were consulted in May/2021 at: https://marvin.sm/ and https://www.mynumi.net/.
It is important to note that the coins that can fetch these prices are those that are uncirculated and in perfect PROOF condition. So the first question is answered: it is very difficult for those 2 euro coins in your pocket to be worth as much as these.
Now let’s review in detail each of the coins presented.
2-euro coin: Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve
The 2021 Lithuanian coin, issued a few weeks ago, has just moved to the top of the list of most expensive 2-euro coins of all time.

The price is due to the fact that the Bank of Lithuania has reported that, of the 500,000 coins issued, some 500 were minted with an error in the edge, which has set off alarm bells for collectors. This coin is currently offered on eBay for US$2500 , a figure that could change in the next few months.

2 euro coin: 800 years of the Fortress of Monaco
In Monaco it is usual to issue 2 euro coins with very short mintages. Most of its mintages are specifically designed for collectors and investors.

They are generally very attractive coins that use the resource of scarcity to increase their value.
The 2 euro coin minted in 2016, for the 800th anniversary of the Fortress of Monaco, can reach a price of up to 1300 € and more. There are currently very few specimens for sale, which means that its value remains stable or tends to increase over time.
Coin 2 euros: 150th anniversary of the founding of Monaco by Charles III

This coin may be a little cheaper than the previous one, but I am sure that with time it will increase in value. In it we can appreciate CARLOS III with the Castle of MONTE CARLO in the background.
Issued in a run of 15000 pieces, whoever has it and wishes to sell it can ask more than 550 € for it. Of course, it will be essential that it is in its original case and with PROOF quality.
Coin 2 euros: 200 years of the Prince’s Carabinieri Company

Another two euro coin of Monaco, which like its predecessors and others that we will see later, is a true piece of numismatic art. We are in the presence of a beautiful coin that in its design shows a CARABINERO with the Palace of Monaco in the background.
When I checked the price of the 2 Euro coin in question, I noticed that it is out of stock. However, and its selling price was 399 € . Possibly whoever wants to buy it now will have to pay much more for it.
Coin 2 euros: 250th anniversary of the birth of François Joseph Bosio
The Joseph Bosio coin is impressive, beautiful, and almost a must for any collector of 2 euro coins. In its design we find the bust of the artist, accompanied by his famous sculpture The Salmacis Nymph.

The Bosio coin can cost up to 289 € , if you find someone to sell you one of the 16 thousand pieces minted. To buy it today, you may have to pay a larger sum.
Coin 2 euros: 200th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Prince Honoratus V

The last 2 euro coin of Monaco in this list. This coin was minted 15 thousand copies in 2019, and has a value of 244 € in numismatic stores. The piece itself, stands out for all the details in its design of the bust of Prince Honorat V.
2 euro coin: 75th anniversary of the founding of Vatican City
Another of the venues that produces 2 euro coins highly demanded by collectors is the Vatican. In 2004 they minted this beautiful coin, in which we can see on the inside a schematic representation of the walls of Vatican City with St. Peter’s Basilica in the background.

It must be said that the coins minted by the Vatican are intended exclusively for collectors and numismatists. So all the pieces, including the 100 000 of this lot, are issued in PROOF quality.
To buy this coin collectors must be willing to pay up to 130 € , if they find it available somewhere.
Coin 2 euros: XX World Youth Day

The XX World Youth Day coin was minted 16 years ago, and currently has quite an important value for collectors. This coin has an approximate value of 275 € and it is not very common that there are many coins for sale.
The design of the coin features a representation of the Cologne Cathedral with a comet above it. A significant detail is that one of the spires of the Cathedral extends to the outer ring of the coin. The level of detail is impressive.
Coin 2 euros: V centenary of the Pontifical Swiss Guard

Another Vatican 2 euro coin issue that is very much in demand by collectors. It was minted in commemoration of the centenary of the Swiss Guard and therefore exhibits a beautiful allegorical motif on one side.
Collectors can pay more than 200 € for coins of this type that have PROOF quality and are in their original case.
Coin 2 euros: Bartolomeo Borghesi
Now we go to San Marino, which is another European state that is characterized by issuing beautiful 2 euro coins and very desired by numismatic collectors.

This piece has a particularity that separates it from the others included in the list. It is that this is the first 2 euro coin that was minted for circulation and not in collector format.
Technically it is a “circulating 2 euro coin”; however, if you have a piece of this type you could sell it for around 150 € . I would say that, in some cases, depending on its state of preservation, you could ask for much more.
Coin 2 euros: Galileu Galilei

The 2005 San Marino coin minted in honor of Galileo Galilei is a beautiful piece, which can be obtained for 119 € or a little more in online coin stores. The coin features the brilliant Italian astronomer observing the stars.
It is important NOT to confuse this coin, with another coin minted in Italy in 2014 for the 450th anniversary of Galileo’s birth. The latter is a beautiful piece, but less valuable than the San Marino.
Coin 2 euros: Alpine Ski World Cup

Already at the bottom edge of this list, we find the 2 euro coin minted in Andorra, which can be worth up to 100 € . The amazing thing about this coin, besides its beautiful design, is that it is relatively recent, it was minted in 2019.
The Andorran 2 euro coin depicts in the foreground a skier descending the slope. Behind, four curved lines taken from the official logo of that year’s skiing World Cup finals.
The most valuable 2-euro coin of all: Grace Kelly
The most expensive 2-euro coin, the one for which the highest amount of money is paid to date is the famous is the 2007 Monaco Commemorative Edition. This run of 2 euro coins is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the death of Princess Grace Kelly.
Engraver Hubert Lariviere is responsible for the design of the famous Grace Kelly coin. Coveted by all collectors of 2 € coins.

This coin was minted in 20,000 examples and from the first moment it was marketed with a price of 100 euros . It is a rare coin that many collectors gave up because of the price.
It is currently out of stock in all numismatic stores, and unfortunately a clandestine market of counterfeits of this coin has flourished. If someone offers you a better one, verify it with a specialist before taking out your wallet.
The originals are presented in an individual red Flower of Cuño case.

The selling price of the coin of the Princess of Monaco was 4350 € . Thus becoming the most expensive 2 euro coin to date.

As you can see, the list of the 2021, 2 euro coins is quite extensive and varied in terms of motifs, mintages and certainly in their selling prices.
Some of these coins will be minted to be placed in circulation, but others will be limited issues in PROOF grades for collectors. I have no doubt that, in the future, some of the coins minted this year could enter the list of the most expensive 2 euro coins.
Why are 2€ coins value in fashion?
The collections of 2 euro coins are very fashionable for several reasons. Of course, not just any coin, but those valuable 2-euro coins.
The first is that in recent years several media have published, and to some extent viralized, articles where they claim that there are 2-euro coins that are worth a lot of money.
Among the most consulted articles we have this one, this one and this one.
They are not fake news, but neither can they boast accuracy. I will explain what details are being left out of the release.
The 2 € coins that can be sold very expensively are few, and they are certainly not the specimens that you were given as change in your last cash purchase.
They are rare €2 coins that are worth a lot of money, because they are minted as commemorative coins (most of the time), on specific dates and for specific reasons. In addition, the 2 euro pieces that have value are issued in very small mintages and dedicated to collectors.
Even so, the repercussion of the subject in the media has led many people to take an interest in 2 euro coins. Many think that they will win the lottery with that piece of metal that they have found or have been returned in the purchase, but it is very difficult for something like that to happen.
The second reason is that there are many denominations of 2 euro coins. In fact, it is the type of coin with the most mintages within the euro pieces. This is because 2-euro pieces are the only ones that can be minted for commemorative purposes, as reported by the European Central Bank.
So many people with numismatic interests have seen the possibility of creating collections of 2-euro coins that increase in variety every year. Still, most pieces can be purchased for little money, which brings us to the next point.
Where to buy or sell 2 euro coins?
There are many places to buy 2 euro coins to get started in numismatic collecting of 2€ coins value. You can look for coin shops in your city, or buy online through stores specialized in this type of articles.
It is important that before you start paying for coins, think about what kind of collection you want to have. Also, analyze your budget, because, although most 2 euro coins are cheap, some of them could be drastically out of your reach.
Also…
Consider that a 2-euro piece that you buy for 10 euros (as is the case of the 2-euro coin commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Asterix character) is not expensive if you look at it individually. On the other hand, if you wanted to buy all the European issues of any given year, even if they cost only 10 euros, we would be talking about a significant amount of money.
In any case, collecting 2 euro coins is still cheaper than collecting Ancient Roman Coins.
Finally, I particularly like these online stores in Europe that I have mentioned in the article:
… and specifically in Spain you can find good deals at:
If you liked this article share it with your friends, so that together you can talk about this fantastic world of collecting 2 euro coins.
